Maida Flour is finely refined and bleached wheat flour. It is also known as refined wheat flour. It contains very less protein when compared to all the purpose flour those used in most of the food recipes in India. Maida Flour is a significant part of the baking industry. It is playing vital role in making food products that stimulates harmful effects to human health. Paratha (Parotta), Samosa, Breads and Cakes are commonly prepared using Maida flour. Maida is the major ingredient of fast foods and junk foods.

How Maida flour is made?

Maida is prepared by the extracts after separating 97% of the rich fiber for Wheat flour. Alloxan is used to bleach this extract in order to make it soft and white. The decomposed product of uric acid is known as Alloxan. Alloxan in Maida cases various health effects on human being.

Poor nutrition food Causes Health issues

As Maida is made by removing 97% of the fiber rich wheat, this refined flour has very poor nutritional value. While extracting Maida from Wheat flour, the following nutrients are removed.

  • Iron
  • Calcium
  • Vitamin B, E
  • Magnesium
  • Phosphorus
  • Protein
  • Beneficial Unsaturated Fatty Acids

Maida Side Effects

Poor nutrition is not only the reason to avoid Maida, but also it cases very harmful side effects on human health. Food prepared with Maida as an ingredient causes three harmful side effects of Maida flour namely indigestion & constipation issues, type II diabetes and heart diseases.

1. Maida causes Indigestion & Constipation

The food products made by Maida such as Parotta and white bread have compact matrix and solid food properties. These are not rapidly digested foods. This kind of food lowers the blood response and they are not readily accessible to the digestive enzymes. Thus, Parotta, White bread, Samosa and other food products made by Maida are hard to digest by the digestive system.

Improper diet and Complex carbohydrate in the food are the major reasons for constipation. Foods made with Maida have complex carbohydrates that lead to constipation. Thus, Maida is the main ingredient to avoid in food in order to avoid constipation.

2. Maida causes Type II Diabetes

Regular consumption of foods made by Maida increases the level of glucose in blood. A human body must produce a maximum amount of Insulin in order to manage the effects caused by the refined food consumption. As mentioned earlier, Alloxan is used to improve the softness and colour of Maida. Alloxan destroys a huge amount of pancreatic beta cells in blood. The main duty of Pancreas is regulating the sugar and glucose level in human body. Thus, the utilization of Alloxan deregulates the blood sugar level in blood and damages blood cells that lead to diabetics. High pace of pancreas release by the chemical used in Maida reduces the production of insulin required to regulate the blood sugar that causes type II diabetic.

3. Maida Causes Obesity & Heart Problems

Quick weight gain and storage of fat in the body are caused by the consumption of Maida. As we all aware, these are the major reason for the heart attacks in India. The chemicals in Maida have the ability to negatively affect the natural properties of the hormones that cases rapid weight gain.

Moreover, the consumption of dietary fibre from whole grains and cereals reduces the risk of colorectal cancer. Thus, consumption of food prepared by wheat flour is healthier than the consumption of food stuffs prepared using Maida.

This over usage without enough knowledge on the effects of these pesticides increases the risks of personal health, social health and environment health. The effects of pesticides used in agriculture would increase when the farmers use them without appropriate supervision or understanding the usage. The agricultural products can be contaminated by these hazardous chemicals. Usage of pesticides is also an important factor for various diseases from foodborne diseases to Cancer in India and other developing countries.

Foodborne Disease

Food Poisoning is the colloquial reference given for Foodborne disease or Foodborne disease. Any kind of illness resulted from contaminated food by chemicals, viruses, bacteria and other types of natural toxins such as various species of beans and poisonous mushrooms are referred as foodborne disease.

As we all aware that usage of pesticides affects human health. We have another shocking report of pesticides used in India. Reuters reported that up to 30% of the pesticides used in India are fake pesticides. These may even more dangerous to human health, crops and the environment. These pesticides resemble similar to original pesticides, made secretly with the same names of original pesticides. The average value of pesticides business in India is $4 billion. The report is also mentioned that the growth of fake pesticides in India is 20%. These fake pesticides not only affect human health and environment, but also affect our food production and economy. Over 10 million tonnes, India loses 4% of food output every year due to the increase of fake pesticides. It is not just a matter of news; it is a matter of food security.

WHO (World Health Organisation) recommends locally produced or Organic food for food safety. Less or no usage of pesticides in agriculture offers more personal and environmental benefits by locally produced or organic foods. However, it is usual that the cost of organic food is high when compared to non-organic foods. Thus, most of the Indian families could not afford this for their daily consumption. So, How to reduce the effects of pesticides at least to a minimum extent? We have answers from World Health Organisation.

How to reduce consumption of pesticides from Non-Organic Foods?

World Health Organisation offers some simple ways to reduce indirect pesticide intake from foods that are produced with the influence of pesticides. You can take these precautions to reduce the effects of pesticides from the common agricultural products.

  • Scrub the vegetables and fruits after rinsing thoroughly. If appropriate, peel them.
  • The outer leaves could be removed from the leafy vegetables like cabbage and cauliflower.
  • Chemicals might have significantly retained in the fat from fish, poultry and meat. Thus, trim fat from these foods before food preparation.

Long-term consumption of soft drinks increases risks for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease based on a social research.

  1. Linked to DNA ageing and cell Damage

A study identified that consumption of 350ml carbonated soft drink causes DNA change which changes cells 4.6 years older. Regular consumption of soft drinks results in accelerated DNA ageing.

Another study identified that cola based soft drinks may cause semen quality, menstrual disorders, ovulatory and pregnancy miscarriages.

Soft drink consumption may lead to fetal arrhythmias (increase or abnormal heartbeat) during pregnancy. The risk of low birth weight (LBW) is another effect of soft drink intake during pregnancy.
